Abstract:
This talk advocates for Confucian virtue ethics as an indispensable resource within a plurality of human values and moral norms, extending beyond approaches derived solely from dominant Western ethical theories. It argues that Confucian virtues, especially humaneness (ren), trustworthiness (xin), role-loyalty (zhong), authenticity (cheng), and the like, should be incorporated into the normative architecture of generative AI systems. Most existing generative AI systems have not adequately integrated the dimension of virtue into their design philosophy, creating a “virtue gap” in their performance and their impact on human well-being. The danger of such a virtue gap was evident in the recent Hugging Face incident. With its humanistic orientation toward human flourishing and social prosperity, Confucian virtue ethics can help shape a human-AI world in which artificial agents are woven into a network promoting human flourishing. Drawing inspiration from Confucian classics, the paper suggests several key virtues that should serve as normative principles in the ethical design of generative AI. Guided by these principles, generative AI would be better equipped to produce outputs and recommendations that align with human moral judgment and social values. These normative principles can also serve as guardrails, helping to prevent generative AI from producing outputs that bring harm to users and society.
